Making Money With Website

And so Comic Con International: San Diegio have closed registration again after, for the second time, the whole computer system crashed.

Epic, the company handling the online registration tell me that it’s Comic Con’s fault, they are unable to handle the amount of registrations that Epic are sending to them – but evidence is that few people are able to even et that far and the Epic website just can’t handle the traffic. While they boast on their website that hey can handle 100,000 registrations, I guess that doesn’t mean all at the same time. And everyone is making “epic fail” jokes. Comic COn have apologised for the inconvenience, especially for those who got up early/got to work early/went without breakfast to register. And they promise an update soon…

Here are a few people’s experiences

t_WILLI: i got in but then it crashed again. i got my hopes up too!

SirJaffacake: Apparently Epic Registration spent the last three weeks making a bunch of new error pages.

Politico reports:

“Huffington has styled herself as a ‘new media’ maven and an expert on the effective deployment of news and celebrity on the Internet in the service of political ends,” says the complaint. “As will be shown at trial, Huffington’s and Lerer’s image with respect to the Huffington Post is founded on false impressions and inaccuracies: They presented the ‘new media’ ideas and plans of Peter Daou and James Boyce as their own in order to raise money for the website and enhance their image, and breached their promises to work with Peter and James to develop the site together."...

Democrats need “to develop a dominant position within the Internet,” Daou said during an early meeting about the site, according to the complaint. “It is a system pushing the message, not just for fundraising,” he allegedly said.

Huffington called the charge of stolen ideas and broken deals “a completely absurd, ludicrous supposition” from men whom she’d turned down for jobs on the site.
This might be interesting  — a stark presentation of the Huffington Post's political agenda. But, really, I'm not too impressed with this notion of stealing "the idea" for a business. Was there a contract or a partnership or not? And it's not much of an idea anyway — a "dominant" website with a political slant. The trick is to do it well and get the traffic. Anyone could try to do it. Huffington did it. Possibly because she picked the right people to work with, and it wasn't Boyce and Daou.

The lawsuit touches on the same legal frontiers of intellectual property and deal-making as did a famous lawsuit Facebook settled in 2008. The success of the suit, which seeks unspecified damages, will hinge on whether Daou and Boyce can prove they had offered “something more specific than a generalized notion” and that Huffington had agreed to make them part of the deal, said Dan Kornstein, a prominent New York litigator.
What is the "more specific" thing? The complaint says the idea was for "a collective of blogs by notable personalities, non-partisan news aggregation, issue-specific web pages, scoops and exclusives derived from the founders’ personal relationships with Democratic Party and media insiders, and online community-building, with the purpose of driving Internet traffic and ‘page views’ for politically progressive messaging.” I'm not impressed.

Stock Making Money

Growing up,
I always assumed that people in a position of power or authority got there
based on merit. It never crossed my mind that someone might actually be in
charge of something VERY important like, say, the monetary system, and NOT know
what he or she was doing.

After all,
the US has created a system for verifying if you’re an expert or not, hasn’t
it? If you have an advanced degree, especially from a prestigious school, then
you should know what you’re talking about, right? And if you not only graduated
from a prestigious school but actually TAUGHT at one for decades… well then
you’ve GOT to be an expert, right?

After all, you literally have been PAID to
study and think for your entire adult life.

I only ask
all of this, because according to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, the Fed sees
little risk of inflation occurring in the US at this time. This is rather
staggering given that ANYONE with access to the Internet (forget the education
and degree) could gain access to charts that clearly show the US is heading
towards, if not ALREADY IN, an inflationary storm.

Below is a
chart of the US Dollar. I got this chart from a research tool called
stockcharts.com. It costs about $180 ($15 per month). However, this same image
can be culled from numerous free sources. So if budgetary restraints forbid
ear-marking $200 for “research” at the Fed, a quick visit to Bigcharts.com or
Yahoo! Finance should do the trick.

As you can
see, the US Dollar has fallen from about 88 to 76 in the last six months.
That’s a 13% decline… in six months. I
realize this might be hard for those who don’t look at charts too often so I’ve
annotated things so it’s easy to grasp.

Now, I DON’T
have a PhD in Economics from Harvard, but it seems pretty obvious to me that
when the currency in which assets are priced loses value, the prices of assets denominated in that currency will
rise… which is inflation.

Now if only
there were a tool for visualizing the price of various assets…

Surprise!
Stockcharts has this one too! The below chart is for the Jeffries Commodities
index (a basket of commodities or hard assets). As you can see, while the US
Dollar has fallen, these prices have RISEN.

Of course,
this means that when you lump together ALL commodities, their prices are
generally rising. I realize this is pretty out
there
as far as economic research goes. So let’s try to make things more
concrete and “close to home.”

The below
chart shows the price of agricultural commodities over the last year.
Agricultural commodities are things like wheat, soybeans, cotton, orange juice,
and coffee. Human beings use these materials to create things like food and clothing, which they need to survive on Earth.

As you can
see, the prices of agricultural commodities are rising. Because of this, the
cost of food will… RIIIIIISE. So will
the cost of making clothing. This means humans will have to spend MORE money to
buy the SAME amount of FOOD and CLOTHING... which is innnnnflation.

We’ve
already covered a lot of ground in this research, but I’ve saved the best for
last.

You see,
there’s one commodity which is VERY important for the US economy. It’s called
oil and it’s used to make our cars go VROOM!  Just as importantly, oil is used by truck companies to ship
food and other goods around the US.

I mention
all of this because the price of oil is also… going up!

In closing,
I know this research isn’t presented in the usual academic format. As such it
may not be ivy-league material. However, on planet earth, the cost of
commodities is an important gauge for inflation. The same goes for the value of
the US Dollar. If the US Dollar falls
and prices rise, then you are
experiencing inflation.

Which, as
the above charts show, we are experiencing NOW. Forget risk of it happening. It
is happening right now. Today.

On a closing
note, I know I’ve been as vocal a critic of the Government’s spending as
anyone, but I personally would not mind if Obama and pals want to earmark an
additional $200 in the 2011 National Budget for “Fed Research.” I assume once
Ben Bernanke and the rest of the folks at the Fed get ahold of this incredible
charting technology, they’ll be better able to monitor how the world operates
and make better forecasts.

After all,
that’s how research works, right?

OK, so there’s this Democratic president who’s really good on spending. Meaning, he does it a lot. Among the most ever, in fact.

For more than 18 months he spent like there was no midterm.

He authorized the government takeover of a car company. When in doubt — or not — get the government involved. Something about saving jobs, union jobs.

But now the government’s getting out by selling stock. And it looks to be making money. Which is an unknown thing in government but in private business usually involves getting back more money than was put it. It’s called a profit. He couldn’t bring himself to say the word. But that’s what it is, a profit for taxpayers.

So do you think that profit will be returned to taxpaying shareholders whose money saved the day?

Here’s how that president put it:

THE PRESIDENT:  Hello, everybody. Good afternoon. Today, one of the toughest tales of the recession took another big step towards becoming a success story.

General Motors relaunched itself as a public company, cutting the government’s stake in the company by nearly half. What’s more, American taxpayers are now positioned to recover more than my administration invested in GM.

And that’s a very good thing. Last year, we told GM’s management and workers that if they made the tough decisions necessary to make themselves more competitive in the 21st century — decisions requiring real leadership, fresh thinking and also some shared sacrifice –- then we would stand by them.

And because they did, the American auto industry -– an industry that’s been the proud symbol of America’s manufacturing might for a century; an industry that helped to build our middle class -– is once again on the rise.

Our automakers are in the midst of their strongest period of job growth in more than a decade. Since GM and Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy, the industry has created more than 75,000 new jobs. For the first time in six years, Ford, GM and Chrysler are all operating at a profit.

In fact, last week, GM announced its best quarter in over 11 years. And most importantly, American workers are back at the assembly line manufacturing the high-quality, fuel-efficient, American-made cars of tomorrow, capable of going toe to toe with any other manufacturer in the world.

Just two years ago, this seemed impossible. In fact, there were plenty of doubters and naysayers who said it couldn’t be done, who were prepared to throw in the towel and read the American auto industry last rites.

Independent estimates suggested, however, that had we taken that step, had we given up, we would have lost more than 1 million jobs across all 50 states. It would have also resulted in economic chaos, devastating communities across the country and costing governments tens of billions of dollars in additional social safety net benefits and lost revenue.

That wasn’t an acceptable option –- to throw up our hands and to quit. That’s not what we do. This is a country of optimistic and determined people who don’t give up when times are tough. We do what’s necessary to move forward.

So these last two years haven’t been easy on anybody. They haven’t been without pain or sacrifice, as the tough restructuring of GM reminds us.

And obviously we’ve still got a long road ahead and a lot of work to do -– to rebuild this economy, to put people back to work, to make America more competitive for the future and to secure the American Dream for our children and our grandchildren.

But we are finally beginning to see some of these tough decisions that we made in the midst of crisis pay off. And I’m absolutely confident that we’re going to keep on making progress. I believe we’re going to get through this tougher and stronger than we were before.  Because just as I had faith in the ability of our autoworkers to persevere and succeed, I have faith in the American people’s ability to persevere and succeed. And I have faith that America’s best days and America’s — and American manufacturing’s best days are still ahead of us.

Finally, I just want to embarrass a couple of people. Ron Bloom and Brian Deese are key members of the team that helped to engineer this rescue of GM and Chrysler. So it had not been for these two gentlemen, a whole lot of people might be out of work right now. We are very proud of them and I figured that I’d go ahead — you can see they’re all looking sheepish — point them out to you. So thank you very much, everybody.

Growing up,
I always assumed that people in a position of power or authority got there
based on merit.

We’ve
